Twenties Economics | Credit Cards

Hello Everyone,

I hope all is well!

In today’s episode we will discuss credit. I know - scary! However, at some point in your life, you may need to borrow money to make a large purchase, such as a car or a home. Having a strong credit score can make it easier to get approved for financing and can result in lower interest rates, which can save you money over time. Without a good credit score, you may find it challenging to get approved for loans, and if you do, you may end up paying higher interest rates.

So, without further adieu, let’s get into it!

Understanding Credit: A Guide for University Students

So, first, we must define what credit is. And credit is an essential financial concept that can have a significant impact on your life. Essentially, credit is the ability to borrow money with the expectation that it will be paid back over time, typically with interest. This can come in the form of credit cards, loans, or other types of financing. As a university student, it's crucial to understand credit and how it works. Here are a few reasons why you should take the time to learn about credit

1. Building Credit Takes Time

Your credit score is a reflection of your credit history, which means that it takes time to build up a good score. By starting to build credit early in your life, you give yourself more time to establish a positive credit history, which can help you in the long run. It's essential to understand that building good credit takes time, and you need to be patient and consistent with your credit habits.

2. Credit Scores Can Impact Your Job Prospects

In some cases, potential employers may check your credit score as part of the hiring process. A poor credit score could impact your ability to get hired for certain positions. This is especially true for jobs that involve handling money or financial transactions. Therefore, it's crucial to start building your credit early in your life to avoid any negative impact on your job prospects.

3. Credit Scores Can Impact Your Wants and Needs

Having a good credit score is important for university students seeking to rent an apartment or purchase a car. Landlords and car dealerships check credit scores as part of their application process to assess creditworthiness. A high credit score signals to these entities that a student is responsible with credit and has a history of paying bills on time. In contrast, a low credit score can be a red flag and make it more challenging for students to secure financing.

A low credit score can result in a higher interest rate on loans or credit accounts, making it more expensive for students to borrow money. In some cases, a low credit score may even require a co-signer to secure the loan. Students who have a low credit score may also have trouble finding an apartment to rent. Landlords are hesitant to accept tenants with a history of missed or late payments and may require a higher security deposit or proof of income.

To avoid these challenges, university students should make a point to monitor their credit scores regularly and take steps to improve them if necessary. This can be done by paying bills on time, keeping credit utilization low, and avoiding new credit applications. Additionally, students may want to consider opening a credit card account, as this can be a great way to start building credit. However, it's important to use credit cards responsibly and avoid maxing out the credit limit or making late payments.

Improving credit scores can take time, but the effort can pay off in the long run. A good credit score can help university students secure loans, obtain credit cards with favorable terms, and achieve their financial goals. Therefore, it's essential for students to make building good credit habits a part of their financial routine. By doing so, they can set themselves up for a strong financial future and make positive impacts on their communities.

So, how can university students start building their credit?

  • Open a credit card account: A credit card can be a great way to start building credit, as long as you use it responsibly. Look for a card with a low interest rate and no annual fee, and make sure to pay off your balance in full each month. To alleviate some fears I recommend that you follow these tips:

    • Make payments on time: Late payments can have a negative impact on your credit score, so it's important to make all of your payments on time. Set up automatic payments or reminders to help you stay on track.

    • Keep your credit utilization low: Your credit utilization is the amount of credit you're using compared to your total credit limit. Keeping your utilization low (ideally below 30%) can help boost your credit score. Avoid applying for multiple credit cards at once as it can negatively impact your credit score.

    • Spend your credit card like it’s a debit card: By using your credit card to pay only on what you can afford will save you much heartache later on.

Do you have any that you’d recommend?

When it comes to finding the right credit card for university students, there are a few factors to consider. Twenties Economics | Savings Account

Hello Everyone,

I hope all is well!

As a university student, it's essential to begin building good financial habits early on. One of the best ways to do this is by opening a savings account. A savings account can help you save money for emergencies, future expenses, and long-term goals. In today’s episode we will discuss the importance of having a savings account and which ones that all university students should be caring about as well as where and how to start with building them! So, without further adieu let’s get into it!

So what is a savings account and why should I care?

University students should care about starting a savings account because it can help them save money for emergencies, future expenses, and long-term goals. A savings account can also help students build good financial habits early on, such as budgeting and saving regularly. By choosing the right type of savings account and the right financial institution, university students can maximize their savings and achieve their financial goals.

Savings Accounts that All University Students Should Have

Long-Term Savings Account

A long-term savings account is a type of savings account (which is the one that many of us have heard of) is designed to help you save for larger, long-term goals such as a down payment on a car or a house, or for retirement. This type of account typically has a higher interest rate than a traditional savings account, which can help you grow your savings more quickly. There are several different types of long-term savings accounts. Some options for long-term savings accounts for university students include high-yield savings accounts, Roth IRAs, and 529 plans. It's important to research and compare the features and benefits of each type of account before choosing one that fits your needs and financial goals.

A High-Yield Savings Account

A high-yield savings account is a type of savings account that pays a higher interest rate than a traditional savings account. This type of account is ideal for university students who want to earn a little extra cash on their savings. While the interest rates on savings accounts are relatively low, every little bit helps, and a high-yield savings account can help you build your savings more quickly. Some good options for high yield savings accounts include Discover Bank and Marcus by Goldman Sachs.

An Emergency Savings Account

An emergency savings account is a type of savings account that is specifically designed to help you save money for unexpected expenses. This account should contain enough money to cover at least three to six months of living expenses. This way, if you suddenly lose your job or suffer an unexpected expense, you'll have the financial cushion you need to get through it. An emergency savings account can also be a high-yield savings account. A high-yield savings account typically offers a higher interest rate compared to a traditional savings account, which means that your money can grow faster over time. By using a high-yield savings account as your emergency fund, you can earn more interest on your savings while still having quick access to your money in case of an emergency.

To build an emergency savings account, university students can start by setting aside a portion of their income each month. This can be a small amount, such as $5or $20, or maybe even $50, that is automatically transferred from their checking account into a savings account. Over time, these small contributions can add up and create a solid financial cushion for unexpected expenses. It's also important to avoid dipping into this account for non-emergency expenses, such as entertainment or dining out. Instead, students should use it only for true emergencies, such as unexpected medical bills or car repairs or rent.

Online savings accounts and credit union savings accounts are good options for university students looking to build their emergency savings account. These types of accounts typically offer higher interest rates (which is what we want!) and lower fees than traditional savings accounts. Some specific options to consider include Discover Bank and Marcus by Goldman Sachs for online savings accounts, and credit unions in your local area for credit union savings accounts. It's important to research and compare savings accounts before choosing one, taking into account factors such as interest rates, fees, and accessibility.

Which Savings Accounts are Best for University Students?

As a university student, you'll likely be living on a tight budget, so you'll want to choose a savings account that offers the best interest rates and the lowest fees. Here are some of the best savings accounts for university students:

1. Online Savings Accounts

Online savings accounts are a great option for university students because they typically offer higher interest rates than traditional savings accounts. They also often have lower fees, making them an affordable option for students on a budget. With online savings accounts, you can manage your account from anywhere with an internet connection, making it easier to keep track of your savings.

2. Credit Union Savings Accounts

Credit unions are non-profit financial institutions that are owned by their members. They typically offer lower fees and higher interest rates than traditional banks, making them an excellent option for university students. Credit unions often have a focus on community and may offer additional benefits such as financial education resources.

3. Student Savings Accounts

Many banks and credit unions offer special savings accounts specifically designed for university students. These accounts typically have lower fees, higher interest rates, and other benefits such as free checking accounts and ATM access. Student savings accounts may also have special features such as incentives for good grades or other achievements. It's important to research and compare savings accounts before choosing one. Look for accounts with low fees, high interest rates, and features that fit your needs. Consider factors such as accessibility, customer service, and ease of use.

I hope this helps!

Twenties Economics | Budgeting

Hello Everyone,

I hope all is well!

As a university student, life can be overwhelming. Between classes, extracurricular activities, work, and socializing, it may be challenging to find time to take care of your personal grooming routine while building your identity capital. However, learning how to groom yourself at home can be an excellent way to save time and money, and build confidence.

Hello Everyone,

I hope all is well!

Today, we will discuss financial literacy, budgeting to be specific. It’ll be a tough episode but an important one.

Financial Literacy - What It Is and Why It Is Important

University can be an exciting time, full of new experiences and opportunities. However, it can also be a time of financial stress and uncertainty. That's why university students need to learn how to budget effectively. Financial literacy is crucial for university students, particularly minorities and students of color who have historically faced economic disadvantages. Financial literacy is essential to understanding how to manage money, save for the future, and build generational wealth. Without this knowledge, students may struggle with debt, poor credit, and limited financial opportunities. Learning about financial literacy can also help students understand the larger economic and political systems that impact their lives. This knowledge can empower students to make informed decisions and advocate for policies that benefit their communities.

Where Do I Start? With Understanding Why This is Important and How It Can Help You.

University can be an exciting time, full of new experiences and opportunities. However, it can also be a time of financial stress and uncertainty. That's why it's important for university students to understand the importance of budgeting and how to budget effectively.

Budgeting is the process of tracking your income and expenses to ensure that you are spending within your means. It can help you avoid debt, build savings, and achieve your financial goals. Here are some reasons why budgeting is especially important for university students:

Reason 1 - Limited Income

Most university students have limited income, whether it's from a part-time job, student loans, or financial aid. Budgeting can help you make the most of your income by prioritizing your expenses and avoiding unnecessary spending.

Reason 2 - High Expenses

University can be expensive, with tuition, textbooks, and housing costs adding up quickly. Budgeting can help you plan ahead and save for these expenses, as well as identify areas where you can cut back on costs.

Reason 3 - Debt Management

Many university students graduate with significant debt, whether it's from student loans or credit cards. Budgeting can help you manage your debt by ensuring that you are making regular payments and avoiding late fees and penalties.

Reason 4 - Financial Goals

Budgeting can also help you achieve your financial goals, whether it's saving for a study abroad program, paying off your student loans, or building an emergency fund. By tracking your expenses and saving regularly, you can make progress toward your goals and feel more confident about your financial future.

What Do I Need to Do? Or What Are Some Tools I Can Use To Get Started?

Step 1 - Create A Financial Vision Board

Financial vision boards can be useful tools for visualizing and manifesting financial goals. By creating a visual representation of your financial goals, you can keep them in mind and stay motivated to achieve them. Financial vision boards can include images of your dream home, vacation destinations, or even just a savings account balance you want to achieve. By looking at your vision board regularly, you can remind yourself of your goals and take steps to make them a reality.

Pinterest and Canva will be your best friends for this one! Pinterest allows you to find the pictures that emulate your vision and Canva will provide you with the resources to put it together! Both are seamless and interactive for beginners and professionals alike! This will also give you a chance to tap into your creative intelligence which for many often gets neglected.

Step 2 - Obtain a Financial Planner

Obtaining a financial planner can be useful for university students (and those not in university) in several ways. They help students create a budget, manage debt, and save for long-term financial goals. They also provide clarity on where you want to invest, what assets you want to protect, and give you what steps you want to take for retirement.

Hello Everyone,

In today’s episode we will discuss why and how grooming one’s self can be beneficial to you all in the long run - especially while in your twenties. So, without further adieu let’s get into it!

Hello Everyone,

I hope all is well!

In today’s episode we will discuss why and how grooming one’s self can be beneficial to you all in the long run - especially while in your twenties. So, without further adieu let’s get into it!

Why Learning to Groom Yourself Is Useful to University Students

As a university student, life can be overwhelming. Between classes, extracurricular activities, work, and socializing, it may be challenging to find time to take care of your personal grooming routine while building your identity capital. However, learning how to groom yourself at home can be an excellent way to save time and money, and build confidence.

Time is Money

Grooming yourself at home can save you money and time. Instead of going to the salon or spa, you can do it yourself at home. For example, sugaring and eyebrow threading are two grooming techniques that can be done at home with practice. By learning how to do it yourself, you can save money on expensive salon visits and don’t have to deal with the hassle of scheduling appointments or being in traffic. Additionally, you have more control over the process, ensuring that you achieve the desired result - which means no faking a smile when you paid money for an ugly look. With the rise of YouTube tutorials, online blogs, and social media channels, it has never been easier to learn how to groom yourself at home.

Building Confidence

Grooming oneself at home can also build confidence. Always remember that when you take the time to groom yourself, you are investing in yourself. You are taking care of your appearance and presenting yourself in the best possible light. Grooming yourself can lead to a boost in confidence, which can be beneficial in all aspects of life, including social situations and job interviews. When you feel good about yourself, you are more likely to present yourself confidently, which can lead to success.

Moreover, it is important to note that grooming can also have mental health benefits. Because when we go out into the world we should never want to hide who we are. Taking the time to care for yourself can help reduce anxiety and stress, and promote a positive self-image. By committing to self-care, you are prioritizing your well-being and mental health.

Preparing for the Future

Saving money on grooming can also prepare you for the future and living on a tight budget is common for many university students. With the high cost of tuition, textbooks, and other expenses, it can be challenging to justify spending money on expensive beauty treatments. By learning to groom yourself at home, you can save a significant amount of money each year and develop a valuable skill that can be used throughout your life. Plus, the money saved can be put towards future goals, such as paying off student loans, making financial investments, traveling, or starting a business. By investing in yourself and your future, you are setting yourself up for success. It can also be a fun and creative outlet. Experimenting with different beauty treatments and techniques can be a fun way to express yourself and develop a sense of personal style. It can also be a great way to bond with friends and family as you share tips and tricks with each other.

So, Where Can I Start?

Hello Everyone,

I hope all is well!

In today’s episode we will discuss threading! Particularly for the eyebrows. I know many people are waxing or tweezing folks but I am a threading STAN! I do not care. I do not care. I do not care. Except, when it diminishes my pockets of course. As you all know from my last few episodes I am in a financial predicament due to poor money decisions but I’m learning and growing. However, the predicament has given me some time for reflection and I have realized that threading cost me $17 each session…which is $34 per month without the Lyft drive there and back (since I don’t have a car yet). That totals $408 annually. I swear every time I write an episode I am put into perspective how much money I spent on beauty alone - sheesh!

Anyways, that is why I decided to learn how to do it on my own! I was very scared but no pain, no gain so here I am! So, without further adieu, let’s get into it!

So, What Even Is Threading?

Well, gosh, I am so happy you asked! Threading is an ancient method of hair removal, has been practiced in Southern Asia and the Middle East for centuries. It has only recently gained popularity in the Western world - courtesy of migration. Threading is a technique that uses a thin cotton or polyester thread to twist and pull unwanted hair from the root.

Threading is a popular method of hair removal because it is gentle on the skin and can precisely target individual hairs. The technique is particularly useful for shaping eyebrows, removing hair in small, delicate areas, and for those with sensitive skin. Compared to waxing, which can sometimes remove a thin layer of skin along with hair, threading is a gentler option. The technique is also more precise, making it ideal for removing hair in small areas.

You Ain’t Really Tellin’ Me Any Benefits Though…

Threading has many benefits compared to other hair removal methods. It is a natural and chemical-free hair removal technique, making it an excellent option for those who are allergic to products used in other hair removal methods. Threading is also a cost-effective hair removal option as it requires minimal equipment and supplies.

One of the best things about threading is that it is easy to learn, and you can do it yourself at home. Learning threading on your own can be beneficial because it allows you to control the process and avoid any potential irritations that may occur in a salon. With practice, threading can become a quick and easy method of hair removal. Just like tweezing!

I’ll Probably Still Go to My Main Waxer…But I Might Try It In The Future

I completely understand but for the people who are like are me here are a few tutorials as well as a link to the thread and Aloe Vera (for soothing). I recommend washing your face prior and after this.

Twenties Economics | Sugaring

Hello, Everyone!

I Hope all is well!

In today’s episode we will discuss sugaring! Upon much reflection (and my financial predicament) I realized that sugaring put a huge dent in my wallet last year! For me, thé cost to have my vulva, lower legs, and underarms would $135…per month! I haven’t even included the cost of the Lyft there and back (since I don’t have a car yet). So, without the Lyft, that brings me to $1620 I spent last year.

That hurts my feelings considering that I rarely showed off my hairless body due to insecurities! Sighs…however, I have found the light at the end of the tunnel and May I just say that there are benefits to sugaring yourself at home! So, without further adieu, let’s get into today’s episode!

All the Best, LiyaElle KSco.

So, What Even Is Sugaring?

Sugaring is a natural, ancient, and most importantly vegan method of hair removal that has been practiced for thousands of years. The process involves using a sugar paste made from natural ingredients such as sugar, water, and lemon juice to remove hair from the root. Unlike waxing, which can be harsh on the skin and cause ingrown hairs, sugaring is a gentler, more natural, and « less painful » method  of hair removal. I’m not going to lie to you though it hurts slightly less than waxing - you’re still gonna feel it. I don’t care what anyone says it still hurts! However, the smoothness is so worth it.

So, Why Would I Do This You Literally Just Said That It’s Painful?

Well, for a few reasons! The first being that sugaring is gentle on the skin. The sugar paste does not adhere to the skin, only to the hair, which means makes it a great alternative for anyone with sensitive skin, as it is less likely to cause skin irritation or redness. And honestly, this factor does make it less painful compared to waxing - I’ll admit - but not by much! I don’t mean to discourage you I’m just keeping one hunned percent with you!

The second reason is that sugaring is a natural and eco-friendly method of hair removal. The sugar paste is made from all-natural ingredients, which means it is free from harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances. Y’all know (or will soon learn) that I am all about having a clean beauty regimen. So, anything free of toxic chemicals and I am there! Because why not? This is also especially beneficial for those of you who are like me and are environmentally conscious and want to reduce your impact on the planet as much as possible.

The third reason is that sugaring paste is water-soluble, making it is easy to clean up and does not leave a sticky residue on your skin.

Lastly, sugaring also has long-lasting results. With regular maintenance (typically every 4 - 6 weeks), sugaring can lead to permanent hair reduction, which means you won't have to worry about hair removal as often. This is a great time-saver for busy university students, or anyone who doesn’t have a lot of time to spare.

Do I Really Need to Learn How to Do This Myself ?

Now, honestly, you do NOT have to do this yourself y’a girl is just ouchere saving money and adopting a new skill! You can just march yourself up to a SugaringNYC and pay someone else to do it!

However, for university students, or anyone really, in a financial predicament like myself, sugaring at home can be economically beneficial. It is a cost-effective way to remove unwanted hair, especially compared to salon treatments. Sugaring paste can be made at home with simple ingredients (or bought from Amazon because I ain’t got time for that lmao), which means you can save money and avoid the hassle of scheduling (or missing) appointments.

Mmhmm, Got All These Benefits and No Cons?

My bad, you right. It should be noted that sugaring wax has three different consistencies to choose from: soft, medium, and hard. Each consistency is formulated to suit different areas of the body and hair types, so it's important to select the right one based on your hair removal needs.

Soft sugaring wax is the most pliable and easiest to work with. Its soft texture allows for better control and precision, making it ideal for use on delicate areas of the body, such as the stomach, arms, and back. Because the skin in these areas is more sensitive, using a gentle wax like the soft sugaring wax can minimize discomfort and reduce the risk of irritation. Soft sugaring wax is more sensitive to temperature changes and may become too sticky or difficult to work with if it is too warm. It is recommended to keep it at a cooler temperature to maintain its soft and pliable texture.

Medium sugaring wax, on the other hand, is firmer and better suited for use on less sensitive areas like the pubic area (finer hair) or legs. Its thicker consistency allows for a stronger grip on coarser hair, making it more effective for removing hair on larger areas of the body. The medium consistency ensures that the wax is not too soft to be ineffective, but not too hard that it becomes difficult to apply. Medium sugaring wax is less sensitive to temperature changes than its softer counterpart, but it can still become too soft if it is heated too much. It is important to monitor the temperature of the wax and adjust it as necessary to ensure that it maintains the appropriate consistency.

Hard sugaring wax is the firmest of the three consistencies and is typically used for larger areas of the body, such as the chest, underarms, or pubic area (for those of us with curls or just naturally thick hair). Its thick texture makes it easier to spread over larger areas without breaking or becoming too sticky. This type of wax is ideal for thicker, coarser hair as it provides a stronger grip, making it easier to remove hair in one go. Hard sugaring wax is the least sensitive to temperature changes and can withstand higher temperatures without becoming too soft. However, if it is heated too much, it can become too liquid and difficult to work with. It is important to maintain a consistent temperature to ensure that the wax remains at the appropriate consistency for effective hair removal.

A’ight You Have Convinced Me, What Do I Need?

I ain’t gone even front with you, I’m ouchere patting my back for this one! So what you’ll need is

Calm Energy, so take a deep breath and start with your legs first to become comfortable

Gloves (If you’re using your hands)

Body Powder (for when it gets sweaty)

Medium Sugar Wax

Hard Sugar Wax

Sugaring Tool (This Will Be So Hopeful - Especially, for the Flicking)

You Just Gone Leave Me Hanging After I Wax It? What About Post Care?

Neva! For post care you will need:

Chemical Exfoliant

Brown Sugar Physical Exfoliant OR Zéro Waste Body Exfoliator

Healing Oil (for the first week and then transition to body oil) OR Aloe Vera

Even though you cannot exfoliate for 48 hours post wax I recommend you have these prior. I exfoliate every evening - but my estheticians have said 3x per week is enough. I disagree but that’s just me!

You Got Some Tutorials?

Yes! For each body part actually! The black owned company SugarDoh has given great tutorials which I will link right here!

Lower Legs

Pubic Region

Underarms

I’m Still A Little Scared, You Got Any Tips and Tricks?

Yes,

Tip 1 - Exfoliate your skin your 24 - 48 hours prior to sugaring to remove dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs. Remember to exfoliate y’all! ESSENTIAL

Tip 2 - Make sure your skin is clean and dry before beginning the sugaring process. This is where your body powder comes in clutch!

Tip 3 - Apply the sugaring paste in the direction OPPSOTIE OF hair growth and REMOVE in the direction OF HAIR GROWTH for best results.

Tip 4 - If the paste is too sticky, add a small amount of water to it to make it more pliable.

Tip 5 - Don't reuse the same piece of sugaring paste on multiple areas of skin to prevent contamination.

Tip 6 - After sugaring, soothe your skin with Aloe Vera or a cool compress to reduce redness and inflammation. I linked it for you!

Tip 7 - Avoid using any lotions or products with fragrance on the sugared area for at least 24 hours after the procedure to prevent irritation.

Tip 8 - Make sure you are pulling the skin taut

Tip 9 - Stay calm and relaxed in order to produce less sweat. It is scary and intimidating but you got this!

Tip 10 - Make sure to keep up with the 2 week time span for the underarms and 4 - 6 week time span for the body or else it will continue to be painful due to hair follicles growing back thicker and stronger with a vengeance.

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are well!

Today, we will discuss the topic of nails. Particularly how fun and beneficial it can be to learn how to do your nails! A gel manicure by itself without any designs is $35, and since we have to get them done twice a month, that is now $70 per month. This totals to be $840 per year. And that is without the pedicure or the Lyft ride there and back (since I do not have a car yet). Let us also consider that each time we get our nails done, we expose ourselves to high radiation without any protection, leading to skin cancer.

Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to get the supplies and finally learn something that I have always wanted to learn how to do but have always been too intimidated to know: my nails! As someone who is so driven I understand how difficult it may feel to not have things come out perfect but be gentle with yourself and know that progress is being made. So, don't stress if your nails don't come out perfectly on the first couple of tries; like any skill, it takes time and practice to master. During this time I use it to catch up on books, YouTube, listen to music or podcasts, and catch up on TV shows.

Being a STEM student I am always tweaking my logistical intelligence but rarely do I tap into my creative intellect. Through this process I have delved into a form of expression and creativity that I was not aware my mental health needed. I have experimented with different colors, designs, and techniques to create unique looks that reflect my style. It has been very rewarding to save money while improving my skills in an area I have always been intimidated by! So, without further adieu, let’s get into it!

All the Best,

Loving Your Curls | The Low Porosity Sequence

Hello Everyone,

I hope all is well!

Today, we will be discussing how to care for and style low-porosity curls. It has recently come to my attention that hair texture does not matter. Because knowing and understanding your hair porosity can help you choose the right products and techniques to keep your hair healthy and hydrated strands. In short, it all comes down to porosity, my friend! So - let us begin!

Hello Everyone,

I hope all is well!

Today, we will discuss how to care for and style low-porosity curls. It has recently come to my attention that hair texture does not matter. Because knowing and understanding your hair porosity can help you choose the right products and techniques to keep your hair healthy and hydrated strands. In short, it all comes down to porosity, my friend! So - let us begin!

So, thanks for the information, but how do I determine my hair porosity?

I’m so glad you asked! A simple water test is the easiest way to determine your hair porosity. Start by taking a strand of your hair and placing it in a glass of water. If your hair sinks to the bottom of the glass, you likely have high porosity hair. If it floats in the middle, you likely have normal porosity hair. If it floats at the top, you likely have low porosity hair.

Okay… but what does having low-porosity hair strands even mean?

If the water test determines that you have low porosity curls, you may already know of the frustrating challenge it can be to keep them healthy and hydrated. It probably takes your hair a while to absorb products and feels moisturized for an extended period. You probably have had some dry, brittle strands that break easily. And you probably deal with frizz like no tomorrow - especially living within humidity! Don’t worry; it’s natural (pun unintended). Yes, your hair is difficult, but just as you learn to nurture yourself, we will examine how to nurture your hair.

To give you an understanding, low-porosity hair has tightly closed cuticles that make it difficult for moisture to penetrate the hair shaft. Think of it as your hair shaft having a solid wall that blocks haters from entering your peace. When low-porosity hair is not correctly cared for, it can lead to having dry, brittle strands that cause split ends, breakage, and hair loss. So, while protecting your peace is great we can’t forget to network! In today’s episode, we will discuss tips and tricks for networking your curls strands with moisturizing products to keep them healthy and hydrated.

So, now that I know and understand my hair, what’s next?

Well, I’m so glad you asked! Here are five essential tips to aid you in loving your crown!

Tip 1 - Recognize That You Have Great Hair: Let me clarify now that you have GREAT hair! It is perfect the way it is, and your hair strands need a lil’ TLC, just like you and I!

Tip 2 - Use Warm Water: Use warm water instead of hot water when washing your hair. Cold water keeps the cuticles closed. Hot water can cause the cuticles to open, leading to moisture loss. But warm water is gentle on the hair and helps to retain moisture.

Tip 3 - Deep Condition Regularly: Deep conditioning is essential for low porosity curls. Use a deep conditioner formulated for low porosity hair (typically one with hydrolyzed protein) and apply it to the hair as if you were styling your curls - so go section by section. Add heat to help the conditioner penetrate the hair shaft. You can use a steamer, a hooded dryer, or a warm towel to apply heat. Trust me, and your hair will thank you!

Tip 4 - Avoid Heavy Products When Styling Curls: Heavy products like butter and oils can weigh down low porosity curls and lead to buildup. Instead, use lightweight products that penetrate the hair shaft, such as leave-in conditioners and water-based moisturizers, when styling your curls.

Tip 5 - Do Use Heavy Products When Doing A Protective Style: Butter and creams will be very helpful when doing mini twists or mini braids, and oils are a great way to keep your scalp moisturized during those periods.

Tip 6 - Use the LGO or LOG Method When Styling: The LGO (liquid, gel, oil) or LOG (liquid, oil, gel) method is an excellent way to keep low-porosity curls hydrated. My preference that I find my hair enjoys no matter the climate is the LOG method! Begin with sectioning your hair (two back sections and two front sections) First, apply a leave-in conditioner for moisture. Then, rake oil to seal in the moisture and keep the strands nurtured and healthy. Lastly, use a gel for that definition and hold.

Tip 7 - Always start with damp hair! Don’t even place try with a microfiber towel! Just begin the styling process right away!

Tip 7 - Use a Satin or Silk Bonnet or Pillowcase: Cotton pillowcases can absorb moisture from your hair, leading to dryness and breakage. Silk or satin pillowcases and bonnets are gentler on the hair and help to retain moisture. I like to use them WHENEVER I am lying down, even if I am not napping or sleeping.

Tip 8 - ALWAYS Use Heat Protectant: Always use a heat protectant even if you aren’t receiving a silk press. Using heat styling tools such as flat irons and blow dryers can be damaging to curly hair, especially if it's low porosity. High heat will cause the cuticles to open, leading to moisture loss and breakage. To help prevent this, using a heat-protectant spray or serum before using any heat-styling tools is essential. This can help minimize damage and keep your curls healthy and shiny. Remember, it's always better to air-dry your hair whenever possible, but if you must use heat styling tools, protect your curls with a heat protectant.

Tip 9 - Opt for Hairstyles That Require Minimal Tension: Knotless box braids, wigs (if your scalp can handle that - I cannot), mini twists, mini braids, low buns.

Erm, so what products can I use then?

Don’t worry, I gotchu! I would never tell you all this just to leave you hanging. All products listed below are VEGAN and CRUELTY-FREE. While the majority of the brands are BLACK OWNED As I Am and Kera Care are not. I wanted to include Dr. Ali Syed’s products of his knowledge of chemistry and how much he donated to black organizations and the planet.

Veganism | Vitamins That Everyone Should Be Taking

Hello,

I hope all is well!

Today, we will be discussing vitamins. Though not everyone’s favorite topic it is an important topic. Especially, with the many myths and theories saying that on a vegan diet you will not receive all the nutrients needed as opposed to a non-vegan diet. Below, we will go over each and every important supplement and why they matter to vegan and non-vegans alike. So, without further ado, let us begin.

Hello Everyone,

I hope all is well!

Today, we will be discussing vitamins. Though, not everyone’s favorite topic, it is an important topic because vegan or not everyone should be taking these. And with the many myths and theories saying that on a vegan diet you will not receive all the nutrients needed as opposed to a non-vegan diet I have decided that this is something to be discussed. Below, we will go over each and every important supplement and why they matter to vegan and non-vegans alike. So, without further ado, let us begin.

All the Best,

LiyaElle Ksco.

Magnesium

Listen, there’s no I in team! Magnesium knows this which is why taking this will help aid in supporting muscle and nerve functioning as well as energy levels and production. In fact, this element is so cool that it will even help those suffering from insomnia and constipation. Just in case you made need one over the other: magnesium citrate is most helpful for people suffering from constipation, while the glycinate form is more useful for conditions like anxiety, insomnia, chronic stress, and inflammatory conditions.

Magnesium Glycinate Gummies OR Magnesium Glycinate Pills OR Magnesium Citrate

Digestive Enzymes

I know you’ve heard the phrase, “you are what you eat.” And let me tell you - EVERYTHING begins in your gut. Prebiotics are the food for probiotics - which are live good bacteria. These two working together will help the gut in food digestion; bloat prevention; eliminating body odor; provide support to your: brain, heart, immune system; mood; sleep! Basically, take this if you want to carry out your January resolutions!

Digestive Enzymes

Omega 3

If you want to anything your cells need to function. Omega 3s are an integral part of cell membranes throughout the body and affect the function of the cell receptors in these membranes. They provide the starting point for making hormones that regulate blood clotting, contraction and relaxation of artery walls, and inflammation.

Omega 3

Vitamin B12

Also known as as my mother’s best friend because she would hammer this into me! It isn’t until now, however, that I understand it’s importance. This is necessary in the formulation of red blood cells, DNA, nerve cells, and brain development. So, basically, if you do want to breathe, function, or feel you should definitely be taking this vitamin B12 complex!

Vitamin B12

Vitamin D3

Listen, muscle milk and protein will only take you so far! This supplement right here is vital to bone health, muscle movement, nerve communication, and immune system functioning! I don’t know about you but I definitely want to prevent osteoporosis as much as possible!

Vitamin D3

Zinc

I know, hard to believe this does more than just stay on the periodic table. But, it actually plays a key role in healing damaged tissue, cellular growth, supporting the immune system, and the formulation of DNA. With COVID, air pollution, etc. I want to make sure my immune system has all the soldiers it needs to help it win this epidemic war.

Zinc

Iron

Believe it or not this provides more benefit than just making sure your clothes aren’t wrinkled. Iron is a mineral that the body needs for growth and development. Your body uses iron to make hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body, and myoglobin, a protein that provides oxygen to muscles. Iron also aids your body in making some hormones, reducing fatigue, supporting mental focus, maintaining stamina, improving muscle endurance, reducing bruising around the body, supporting the immune system, and for those on that incredible yet dangerous journey ensuring a healthy pregnancy.

Hello Everyone,

I hope all is well!

Today we will be discussing how to achieve a beautiful smile, zero waste style.

I have always wanted that beautiful California white smile without the cost of using disposable plastic and the risk of damaging my enamel and developing teeth sensitivity. Fortunately, now I can with the help of oil pulling, tongue scraping, and flossing to name a few!

But, first, let us discuss!

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil in your mouth to remove bacteria, reduce bad breath, prevent cavities, improve gum health, and promote oral hygiene. Ideally, you would oil pull for twenty minutes but I am too impatient in the morning lol which is why I also oil pull at night time in the shower. You can read more information about this here.

Now, I know some of you may be confused about this next one, but, there is a new method of flossing that I have been trying which is flossing with toothpaste! Flossing already allows you to get into the crevices between the teeth which do not get removed through brushing alone. However, incorporating the active ingredients involved in toothpaste allows you to reach areas of the teeth that couldn’t previously benefit from these ingredients without flossing. You can read more information about it here.

Lastly, I did want to clarify that doing this twice a day, seven days a week is the only way this will work. Now, I’m not sayin’ that I’m judging anybody but I am saying that you should try your absolute best to AT LEAST brush your teeth twice a day if you don’t do anything else.

And without further ado, let’s go!

I would like to include that no one should feel embarrassed or disappointed in themselves for the thought never having crossed their minds. We both recognized that sometimes it is difficult to go the extra mile when you do not know where to look. However, we also recognize that every child (and adult) deserves to feel included in an exciting moment that allows us to indulge our sweet and salty savory tooths!

Zero Waste | A Zero Waste Guide To Menstrual Cycles

Hello!

I hope everyone is doing well!

Today, I will be discussing the infamous bloody hour. Specifically, how I have been approaching it in a zero waste way.

While I adored supporting the big companies who fill our landfills with toxic waste; and implement chemicals into our bodily systems my time with them has come to and end.

So, without further ado, let us begin!

Hello, Everyone!

Menstrual Cups

I incorporated menstrual cups in my last three menstrual cycles and can proudly state that the benefits are true!

Everyone who receives a menstrual knows about the “smell that only we can smell but it feels like the world can smell” when we’re on our menstrual. While I understand it’s normal as there is blood leaving our system due to the cleaning it’s undergoing it can still make you feel insecure. However, with menstrual cups, I have gone about my day and have had no odor AT ALL! I have become odorless on my menstrual.

I also can attest that it is less messy as there is no frequent removal or wrapping of bloody disposables. So, aside from saving me hundreds of dollars annually, it has also allowed me to enjoy my day for longer intervals of time without worry of leaks and uncomfortability.

A lot of times I even wear the menstrual cup at night by itself! I know! The TRUST!

While you really only need one menstrual cup I was unsure which one I’d like so I bought a few extra. The two I have been consistently using are:

June Menstrual Cup Small

June Menstrual Cup Small Firm

For those in their tweens (or a newbie who’s still unsure), the size I, and the brand, am recommending for you are:

June Menstrual Mini

For those of you who have given birth the brand has included one for you as well:

June Menstrual Large

This is not a sponsored post! I just really enjoy the price and inclusivity that June offers!

Menstrual Lubricant

This is needed to aid the insertion process of the menstrual cup. I highly recommend it for beginners! I still use it and will continue using a lubricant as I feel it makes the insertion process so much smoother.

I like to use a water-based lubricant just because of preference - I want to avoid as many toxic chemicals as possible. However, I will provide other forms of lubrication as well.

Water Based

Aloe Vera Gel

(I included this next one for those who may feel like the off-brand version isn’t as natural and for those sensitive to any form of alcohol.)

Aloe Cadabra

Oil Based

Sweet Almond Oil

Virgin Coconut Oil

Menstrual Cleaner & Sterilizer

After every use (so basically every time I take it out) I like to first rinse it and then give it a thorough cleanse. Two soaps I recommend are: Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Liquid Soap (Peppermint) OR Dr. Bronner's Pure Liquid Castile Soap (Unscented)

Naturally, with a reusable item that will contain blood for days straight, you will need to sterilize it. This is both for hygienic and longevity purposes. I complete this segment at the end of my menstrual cycle when the cup is no longer in use. I like to use this portable machine: Pixie Cup Menstrual Cup Sterilizer

However, you can also place it in boiling water for two minutes or even place it in a warm mug (that has been microwaved for three minutes) and let it sit for two minutes for sanitization.

Menstrual Panties

For those of you unaware, PFAS is a large, complex group of chemically manufactured compounds made up of a chain of carbon and fluorine atoms. The carbon-fluorine bond is a uniquely strong bond and causes PFAS to have non-stick qualities that make them water and stain-resistant.

These chemicals are highly toxic to human health and the environment because they are persistent, meaning they build up and don’t go away. They resist degradation in the environment and they remain in our bodies for YEARS after exposure. And the consequences of it can even be passed down to the next generation via DNA due to how long the chemicals stay in our bodies. Let alone the excess exposure. Some health consequences include:

I have yet to try these due to still having pads to use up! However, I will be incorporating these specific panties in my upcoming cycle. While researching menstrual companies free from PFAS this brand has consistently been named. The company not only regularly tests its menstrual products via SGS - a leading testing and inspection company - the company also provides documents to ensure transparency between customers. However, if that has yet to sell you on this brand (it didn’t for me either because companies lie lol) the products were also independently tested by the Sierra Club and Mamavation. (Mamavation always spits the truth and I highly recommend their blog.) Both times the menstrual undies received a ‘clear’ or ‘best’ rating.

So, the menstrual underwear I have purchased to incorporate into my next menstrual is the Aisle Menstrual Booty Shorts. They offer a variety of sizes, colors, and options of undies, however, I chose these for comfort.

What If I Cannot Afford Menstrual Panties At the Moment?

That is completely understandable, especially in this economy! I recommend to you this black owned menstrual brand called Honey Pot. Especially on my toughest days of my menstrual cycle the peppermint infused pads are always so soothing! You can also pick them up from your local drug or department store!

Now, What Do I Do When I’m Using a Public Restroom?

I like to place my lubricant and liquid soap in this travel-size tube for those instances when I am not in the comfort of my own home.

Travel Size Bottle

I also like to carry this peri bottle with me always!

Zero Waste | Zero-Waste Swaps As A College Student

Today, I will be discussing with you all some zero-waste and sustainable swaps I am making or have made in order to make my life more eco-friendly. I want to first note that zero-waste and sustainability is not solely about removing products from your space that are not eco-conscious, nor is it about reaching for perfectionism in terms of one’s lifestyle.

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone is doing well!

So, if you still have products that are bad for the environment but have plenty until it’s life cycle is finished then keep it. It is more sustainable to continue using that product until completely empty than to throw it away half full. Make the necessary transitions when it is beneficial to your lifestyle.

There may be those of you who feel that unless the big corporations and our government make the switch then we’re all just stuck I want you to know that I agree! After all, it is the consequence of these big corporations producing cheap materials for mass distribution that we are in this climate change debacle in the first place. However, it should also be noted that money speaks louder than words. When we - as a people - make the shift then they will follow.

It must also be noted that making the switch is important not only for the health of the planet, but also for the physical health of individuals. Many a time, plastic can be toxic to one’s health as well causing: cancer, birth defects, impaired immunity, and endocrine disruption. I have kindly linked an article right here for your perusal.

Embodying the Aging Gracefully Mindset | Décolletage Skincare Routine

Welcome to my daily and nightly décolletage skincare routine! I hope you enjoy each and every product as much as I do. Below you will find brands and products that are committed to being CRUELTY FREE, VEGAN, SUSTAINABLE, and CLEAN! I do not choose any brands that do not satisfy all four of the above requirements.

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to my daily and nightly décolletage skincare routine! I hope you enjoy each and every product as much as I do. Below you will find brands and products that are committed to being CRUELTY-FREE, VEGAN, SUSTAINABLE, and CLEAN! I do not choose any brands that do not satisfy all four of the above requirements.

Just something to mention: I have combination-oily, acne-prone skin, and have grown up in sunny South Florida all my life! I even attend university here. All that is so you know that what may work for me may not work for you. However, I can guarantee that you will find something that you love! I can also attest that the below skincare routine works for those who have normal-dry, non-acne-prone skin! Below I will be going over a few things to note:

The Kale Cleanser is a humectant so make sure your face is wet prior to applying. If you do not wear makeup often (I, myself, primarily wear eye makeup) you may feel the oil cleansing is unnecessary. While I am not a professional I still advise you to look into or ask a dermatologist about using an oil cleanser. There are impurities, dirt, etc. collected throughout the day and night that I feel should be removed from the face prior to using a water-based cleanser.

I have included an essence because it is vital that we receive that extra dose of hydration due to aging, external factors, AND many western products drying up our skin. This is especially for those that live in tropical and humid areas, like me! Just put a little on the palm of your hand (about three shakes) and you are good to go for the entire décolleté.

The serums are going to help hit those targeted issues we have insecurities about. Lack of glass skin, acne scarring, unnatural texture (because of acne), dehydration, etc. I like to massage them into my skin first and then gently pat them into my skin. Patting the face helps stimulate blood flow and penetration. All of them are going to work together to give you that dewy, sun-kissed glow that we all strive for!

Now listen, before you say the vitamin C serum is super expensive. I am going to say that I personally love this vitamin C serum because it makes sure that you have an even skin tone and clears up hyperpigmentation from acne or old acne scarring. It also works very well with sunscreen. Of course, you do not have to use that specific vitamin C, however, I highly recommend it! Also, while I am not a professional, a licensed dermatologist did recommend it to me! Finally, I strongly urge only using 1 - 2 pumps. In my experience that is enough and can take you a LONG WAY!

Remember to ALWAYS pat or air dry NEVER RUB and when you’re in a hurry for the day steps 1, 4, 5, & 6 are all you need from the morning routine. The rest is just to help you and your skin evolve gracefully because prevention should always be your intention! Let’s say that again - prevention should always be your intention! Also, if you’re using more than 3 drops or pumps then you are using too much!

Lastly, I “advise” all of the products to be pumped or dropped onto your finger or hand. This allows you to receive all of the product rather than most of it going onto a reusable cotton pad and only leaving you with the excess.

As always, all the best,

LiyaElle KSco.

Morning Routine
